Former Eastleigh Mayor Dies.

Margaret Kyrle - OBE BA, one time leader of the Eastliegh Lib Dems, and former two time mayor, passed away sadly this Friday. Mrs Kyrle, who is the mother of Botley councillor and Chris Huhne’s case worker Rupert Kyrle, was recently elated at the nomination and news that her son was elected as Deputy Mayor, following in a long family tradition of public service.

Awarded an OBE and co-opted as a Governor at Eastleigh College, Mrs. Kyrle was a well known and a popular figure in both local politics and the community that she was proud to serve.

In 2003, Eastleigh Borough Councillors bestowed Honorary Freedom of the Borough status to Margaret, the highest award that the council can give to its citizens in recognition of her long service to the council and the people of the Borough.

Deeply sadden by the tragic news, current Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Wayne Irish, spoke of his shock saying, “I have known Margaret and her family for many years and considered her a close friend. I am very sad at her passing and I am deeply upset for her family.”

It is understood that a full civic funeral will take place to honour Mrs. Kyrle with Cllr. Irish, leading tributes to a former colleague and friend with many members of the council, past and present in attendance.
